The 5 Days Kilimanjaro Trekking Marangu Route is the most classic and popular trail to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m). Known as the “Coca-Cola Route”, it offers hut accommodation instead of tents, making it one of the most comfortable trekking options.
This route takes you through lush rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone, providing a diverse trekking experience. It is the shortest itinerary to the top, designed for climbers who are well-prepared and seeking a challenging but rewarding adventure.
Your adventure begins with a drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate (1,870m), where you’ll complete registration formalities before starting the trek. The trail winds its way through the lush rainforest zone, alive with birdlife and playful colobus monkeys. After a steady 4–5 hour hike, you will reach Mandara Hut (2,700m) for dinner and overnight stay.
Today’s trek takes you out of the rainforest and into the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation opens up to reveal sweeping views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, giving you your first true sense of Kilimanjaro’s grandeur. After a 6–7 hour hike, you’ll arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m), where you will enjoy dinner and an overnight rest.
The third day is a steady climb across the alpine desert, where the landscape becomes stark but strikingly beautiful. The trail is wide and offers dramatic panoramas of the mountain’s upper slopes. After approximately 6–7 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Kibo Hut (4,700m), your base for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, you’ll rest and prepare for the midnight ascent.
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. At midnight, you begin your ascent to the summit under the stars, making your way up a steep trail to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. From there, the trail continues to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Standing on the Roof of Africa at sunrise is a breathtaking experience you will never forget. After celebrating your success, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for dinner and overnight. Trekking time today ranges from 10–14 hours.
On your final day, you descend through the moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate, where you will receive your summit certificates to mark your achievement. The trek takes about 5–6 hours. At the gate, you will meet your driver and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, where your Kilimanjaro adventure concludes.
