The 7 Days Kilimanjaro Trekking Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route” is the most popular and scenic trail to Africa’s highest peak. Famous for its diverse landscapes, the route passes through rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone.
This 7-day itinerary is designed with an extra acclimatization day, significantly increasing summit success rates compared to the shorter 6-day version. Trekkers enjoy dramatic views, challenging terrain, and a gradual ascent profile that makes the climb safer and more enjoyable. Accommodation is in tents, supported by a professional mountain crew.
The Machame Route is ideal for adventurers who want the perfect balance of scenery, challenge, and acclimatization.
After breakfast in Moshi, drive to Machame Gate (1,800m) for registration. Begin trekking through lush rainforest, where the path is often muddy and steep. The hike takes 5–6 hours before reaching Machame Camp (3,010m) for dinner and overnight.
Today, the trail ascends more steeply, leaving the rainforest and entering the heath and moorland zone. Trek for about 5–6 hours across ridges and valleys before arriving at Shira Camp (3,845m) on the plateau, with spectacular views of Mount Meru.
This is an important acclimatization day. The trek gradually climbs to the Lava Tower (4,630m), where you stop for lunch. Afterward, descend into the Barranco Valley, filled with giant Senecio plants, and spend the night at Barranco Camp (3,960m). Trekking time: 6–7 hours.
The day begins with the climb of the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling scramble that offers some of the best panoramic views on the mountain. Continue across ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp (4,035m). This is a shorter hike of 4–5 hours, leaving time to rest and acclimatize.
Summit day begins at midnight with a steep climb through the arctic zone to Stella Point (5,739m). From there, continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Standing at the summit as the sun rises is the highlight of your adventure. After celebrations, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for the night. Trekking time: 10–14 hours.
