Day 1: Arrive Arusha

Most international visitors arrive via Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which sits between Arusha and Moshi. After clearing immigration and customs, your driver will meet you at arrivals and transfer you to your Arusha hotel or lodge. Use the afternoon to rest, explore Arusha town, or visit a local coffee tour if you arrive early. Your safari briefing typically happens this evening.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Depart Arusha after breakfast for the roughly two-hour drive southwest to Tarangire National Park. Enter the park and begin your first game drive immediately. Tarangire is home to Tanzania’s largest elephant herds, and the enormous baobab trees scattered across the landscape create a dramatic backdrop unlike any other park.

Look for giant herds drinking from the Tarangire River, large prides of lions resting in shade, and tree-climbing pythons in the baobabs. Overnight at a camp or lodge near the park boundary or inside the park itself.

Day 3: Full Day Tarangire

Day 4: Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Drive from Tarangire to the Ngorongoro Crater rim, passing through the village town of Karatu. The road climbs steadily through farmland and forest to the crater rim at over 2,300 metres. Check in to your rim lodge and spend the late afternoon watching the crater from above — on a clear day, the full 264-square-kilometre caldera stretches below you in extraordinary detail.

The view alone at sunset is worth the journey. Rim lodges also offer excellent birdwatching in the afromontane forest surrounding the crater edge.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Descent and Drive to Serengeti

Rise early — crater descents begin at dawn. Your 4×4 descends via the steep Seneto road into the caldera floor, where a dense concentration of wildlife awaits. The Ngorongoro Crater hosts approximately 25,000 large animals in a self-contained ecosystem: lions, spotted hyenas, black rhinos, Cape buffalo, hippos, and vast wildebeest herds that never leave.

After a morning of crater game drives, exit via the Lerai road and head northwest toward the Serengeti. The drive takes 2–3 hours via the Naabi Hill gate. Arrive at your Serengeti camp in the late afternoon and settle in for sundowners on the plains.

Day 6: Full Day Serengeti

Your Serengeti full day should begin before sunrise. Watching the sun rise over the plains is an iconic experience, and the early morning is when predators are most active. Lions finishing nocturnal hunts, cheetahs scanning from termite mounds, and leopards returning to their trees all happen in the first hours of light.

The central Serengeti around Seronera is one of the world’s top leopard-viewing areas. The Seronera River valley is lined with sausage trees and fig trees that provide perfect leopard resting spots. Your guide will scan the branches carefully at each likely spot.

Day 7: Morning Serengeti Drive and Departure

One final morning game drive before heading out. Depending on your flight schedule, you have time for 2–4 hours in the park before driving to the Seronera airstrip for a domestic flight back to Arusha, or continuing by road. Most international departure flights from Kilimanjaro Airport are in the evening, giving a comfortable margin.
