Best 7-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary: Step-by-Step Guide

Seven days is a solid amount of time to experience the heart of Tanzania’s northern circuit. You have enough days to see three of the country’s most iconic parks without rushing, and with smart logistics, you can stack the highlights beautifully. This is the itinerary we recommend most frequently for first-time visitors, and it consistently delivers extraordinary wildlife encounters.

Why the Northern Circuit?

Why the Northern Circuit?

Tanzania’s northern circuit anchors around Arusha and links Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Serengeti. It is the most visited circuit for good reason — the density and diversity of wildlife here is extraordinary, the infrastructure is excellent, and the range of accommodation spans every budget tier.

In seven days, you can realistically cover Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, and two to three nights in the central or southern Serengeti. This hits the Big Five, the Migration herds, the Crater’s rare black rhinos, and Tarangire’s legendary elephant concentrations all in one cohesive trip.

Day-by-Day 7-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Arusha

Most international visitors arrive via Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which sits between Arusha and Moshi. After clearing immigration and customs, your driver will meet you at arrivals and transfer you to your Arusha hotel or lodge. Use the afternoon to rest, explore Arusha town, or visit a local coffee tour if you arrive early. Your safari briefing typically happens this evening.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Depart Arusha after breakfast for the roughly two-hour drive southwest to Tarangire National Park. Enter the park and begin your first game drive immediately. Tarangire is home to Tanzania’s largest elephant herds, and the enormous baobab trees scattered across the landscape create a dramatic backdrop unlike any other park.

Look for giant herds drinking from the Tarangire River, large prides of lions resting in shade, and tree-climbing pythons in the baobabs. Overnight at a camp or lodge near the park boundary or inside the park itself.

Day 3: Full Day Tarangire

Spend a full day in Tarangire with an early morning and late afternoon game drive separated by a midday break back at camp. Morning light in Tarangire is spectacular — elephants move between the river and interior grasslands as golden light filters through the baobabs. This is prime photography time.

Tarangire is also one of Tanzania’s top birding destinations, with over 550 species recorded. Look for yellow-collared lovebirds, lilac-breasted rollers, and the enormous Kori bustard. In the evening, listen for lions from your camp — Tarangire’s lion population is healthy and vocal.

Day 4: Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Drive from Tarangire to the Ngorongoro Crater rim, passing through the village town of Karatu. The road climbs steadily through farmland and forest to the crater rim at over 2,300 metres. Check in to your rim lodge and spend the late afternoon watching the crater from above — on a clear day, the full 264-square-kilometre caldera stretches below you in extraordinary detail.

The view alone at sunset is worth the journey. Rim lodges also offer excellent birdwatching in the afromontane forest surrounding the crater edge.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Descent and Drive to Serengeti

Rise early — crater descents begin at dawn. Your 4×4 descends via the steep Seneto road into the caldera floor, where a dense concentration of wildlife awaits. The Ngorongoro Crater hosts approximately 25,000 large animals in a self-contained ecosystem: lions, spotted hyenas, black rhinos, Cape buffalo, hippos, and vast wildebeest herds that never leave.

After a morning of crater game drives, exit via the Lerai road and head northwest toward the Serengeti. The drive takes 2–3 hours via the Naabi Hill gate. Arrive at your Serengeti camp in the late afternoon and settle in for sundowners on the plains.

Day 6: Full Day Serengeti

Your Serengeti full day should begin before sunrise. Watching the sun rise over the plains is an iconic experience, and the early morning is when predators are most active. Lions finishing nocturnal hunts, cheetahs scanning from termite mounds, and leopards returning to their trees all happen in the first hours of light.

The central Serengeti around Seronera is one of the world’s top leopard-viewing areas. The Seronera River valley is lined with sausage trees and fig trees that provide perfect leopard resting spots. Your guide will scan the branches carefully at each likely spot.

Day 7: Morning Serengeti Drive and Departure

One final morning game drive before heading out. Depending on your flight schedule, you have time for 2–4 hours in the park before driving to the Seronera airstrip for a domestic flight back to Arusha, or continuing by road. Most international departure flights from Kilimanjaro Airport are in the evening, giving a comfortable margin.

Practical Tips for Your 7-Day Tanzania Safari

  • Fly between parks where possible: Taking a domestic flight from Seronera back to Arusha saves 6–7 hours of road driving on the last day and is worth the investment.
  • Accommodation matters: Staying inside or adjacent to parks means you can do game drives earlier and later, maximizing your time with wildlife.
  • Pack light for bush camps: Most charter aircraft have a 15kg soft-bag weight limit. Duffel bags are preferred over rigid suitcases.
  • Flexible scheduling: The best itineraries have flexibility built in. If you are watching a cheetah hunt, you do not stop for a schedule. A good guide prioritizes wildlife over timetables.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for a Tanzania safari?

Seven days is a very solid first-time Tanzania safari. You can comfortably cover three major parks and experience both the Crater and Serengeti. For a more in-depth experience or to add a Zanzibar extension, 10–14 days is ideal.

Should I include Lake Manyara on a 7-day itinerary?

Lake Manyara is excellent but compact. On a tight 7-day schedule, substituting one day of Tarangire for Lake Manyara is possible but not always recommended. Tarangire’s elephant concentrations tend to be more reliably impressive. Lake Manyara works better on longer itineraries of 9–10 days.

What is the best time for a 7-day Tanzania safari?

The dry season from June to October offers the best overall game viewing across all northern circuit parks. January and February offer exceptional calving action in the southern Serengeti. Avoid the main rainy season in April–May for roads accessibility, especially in Tarangire.
